Power Distribution

The Caves's power distribution focuses on meeting your needs and requests by supplying you with highly available 2N power. Our end-to-end redundancy starts with two transformers at the utility substation delivering power along divergent paths to redundant UPS systems. Step-down redundant transformers feed redundant main power distribution panels, and redundant power distribution boards (PDBs). These PDBs are customized specifically for our facility and allow us to maximize our available data center space while providing a true 2N power option to your rack. The Cave also incorporates medium voltage distribution, which enables our facility to utilize the highly efficient S&C PureWave UPS Systems, while also using less copper overall.

Low Risk Location

As one of the safest-from-natural-disaster cities in the United States, the likelihood of environmental calamities like hurricanes, tornadoes, catastrophic hail, major flooding and earthquakes in Phoenix is minimal to non-existent. This makes our location ideal for primary and disaster recovery colocation services. In addition, the local utility providing power to The Cave, Salt River Project (SRP), has served central Arizona for more than 100 years. SRP has received national recognition for its exceptional electric system reliability and customer service. As a public power company, SRP is committed to delivering energy at a fair price. The company uses a balanced fuel mix, which includes coal, natural gas, nuclear and renewable sources such as geothermal, solar and wind energy, to avoid reliance on any one fuel and limit market volatility.

Going Green

Our data center strives to operate as efficiently as possible while providing the utmost in consistency and maintainability. Through unique features that optimize power consumption, our facility is designed to operate with a 1.39 Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) without the use of outside air. Overall, The Cave employs several green strategies to drive efficiencies and performance. None of these result in any premiums to clients, and in fact result in cost savings we pass along to you.

Green Strategies:

  • Variable frequency drives automatically reduce a motor's speed and power in the instance of a lower system load. Our configuration is proven to have the lowest per-unit energy consumption in the industry.
  • The medium voltage power distribution system uses less copper than many standard data centers, resulting in less conduit required, fewer duct banks, and improved power distribution.
  • Motion light sensors throughout the data center floor significantly reduce energy consumption.
  • The use of Ultrasonic humidifiers maintains proper data center conditions, without adding any heat into the space.
  • The S&C PureWave UPS system features a 99 percent efficiency rating.
  • The V-frame coil design in our CRAH units has the lowest per-unit energy consumption in the industry and utilizes the least amount of floor space.
  • The McQuay Modular Central Plants have zero ozone depletion potential and no phase-out schedule under the Montreal Protocol.
  • By consistently evaluating new technologies, designs and energy options, Phoenix NAP maximizes overall data center efficiencies.
